The R.A.M.S. Team at Kennard-Dale High School is a transition program that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. R.A.M.S stands for Responsibility + Advocates + Mentors = Success. These are the foundational principles of this transition team, as incoming freshmen will learn the new responsibilities that come with being a high school student under the caring and watchful eye of upper class advocates who mentor them throughout their first year in order to help them be successful. Our R.A.M.S. team members are juniors and seniors who have been recommended by their teachers as positive role models who would be especially suited to play an important role in this process for younger students. All team members have committed to their role as mentors and advocates for the freshmen and will be mentoring a small group throughout the school year in an effort to encourage successful habits.
More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in high school, their chance for success increases dramatically. K-D's R.A.M.S Team provides the structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.
R.A.M.S Team is a yearlong transition program with four components that contribute to its success:
- High School Orientation - Team members and freshmen start building the mentor relationship and freshmen receive information about how to be successful in high school
- Academic Follow Ups - Team members support freshman academic success and character development through informal visits during lunches and after school get-togethers.
- Social Follow Ups -Team members and freshmen connect outside the classroom at social events to increase student engagement, and promote positive school climate
- Team Member Initiated Contacts - Team members connect with their freshmen on a more inpidual basis
