Health Careers Club

Our club is for students interested in pursuing careers in the health and human services area. In collaboration with our Guidance Counselors we are able to fully support our students in exploring areas of interest for their post secondary study.

Club activities are dependent upon it's members. The club has participated in health observance dates and other activities such as, Pennies for Pasta, Prom Promise programs, presenting DUI Media presentations, collecting toys for cancer patients and participating in food drives to benefit local food banks. Field trips to area hospitals and colleges, simulation center and the Leg Up Farm. Career shadowing and attending monthly meetings is also a beneficial way our members make informed decisions regarding their future.

Nov 20, 2013 Field Trip to Wellspan York Hospital Simulation Center- On November 20, 2013, 42 Health Career Club members gathered in the Simulation Center and rotated through 9 hands-on stations in groups of 4-6. The club members worked with Professor Jason Lowe, a graduate of Kennard-Dale High School, Dr. Duane Patterson, a Biomedical Engineer, Mr. Paul Schreck and a handful of York College Nurse Anesthesia students. KD students were engaged in hand on activities that simulated surgery done by Laparoscopy, airway anatomy and intubation, central line placement, ultrasound, intravenous and arterial lines, CPR and an AED. and spinal anesthesia. All stations allowed opportunity to ask questions and talk with graduate students and professionals about careers in the health care field. The career day engaged high school students in an interactive learning experience and provided a brief exposure to opportunities in the health career field. Thank you to all parties who planned and participated in this successful exploration for our high school students.

Leg Up Farm:

On April 16, 2015 HCC members attended a field trip to Leg Up Farm where they learned how personal challenges can lead to inspiring changes in healthcare models. They got to meet with the different interdisciplinary teams and hopefully have a better understanding of the educational requirements needed to become Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech Language Pathologists. They also got to explore and participate in small group experiences of mini therapy sessions for each team represented at Leg Up Farm.
